Sonja Betten was born in Kiel (D) in 1978. In 1995 she won 1st prize in the category piano accompaniment at the national competition "Jugend musiziert" in Nuremberg.

From 1997-2006 she studied church music (B-diploma) at the State Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart, artistic education organ with Prof. Dr. Ludger Lohmann and soloist class organ (concert exam) with Prof. Martha Schuster. She received further artistic impulses at masterclasses (e.g. with Peter Planyavsky, Vienna).

Sonja Betten's organ playing has been awarded at international competitions: in 2003 she won the 1st prize at the III. International August-Gottfried-Ritter Organ Competition in Magdeburg. 2007 she won the 2nd prize at the VIII. International Gottfried Silbermann Organ Competition in Freiberg/Saxony.

After her studies, Sonja Betten was a church musician at the Petruskirche Stuttgart-Gablenberg from 2007-2009 and completed the church music internship of the Evangelical State Church of Württemberg in Göppingen from 2009-2010.

Since 2014 Sonja Betten lives in Switzerland and is an organist in the catholic parish of Bad Ragaz and in the Tamina valley.
