The new design of the permanent exhibition is the most comprehensive renovation of Mozart’s Birthplace for over 20 years.  It enhances the narrative power of the house, opens up new approaches to Mozart’s life and œuvre, and creates a visiting experience that brings together authenticity and academic expertise in a contemporary presentation.

Our design plan

THE MUSEUM AS AN EXPERIENCE

The clear aim of the new design is to preserve the unique character of the house while at the same time opening up new ways of discovering the story of Mozart.

Attention is focused not so much on separate objects but on understanding them in their entirety as the Cosmos of Mozart, which is the theme running through all the exhibition rooms of the museum.

Carefully integrated interactive elements, digital media as well as immersive concert experiences open up new approaches to Mozart’s life and his time. Mozart’s family, the intellectual climate of the Enlightenment, the influential journeys and his first musical successes are combined to present a multi-faceted picture that makes it possible to experience the Cosmos of Mozart in a contemporary manner.

 

TECHNICAL MODERNISATION

Investments are being made in the infrastructure so as to improve accessibility to this unique experience: a publicly accessible reception area on the first floor, improved visitor management, tactile floor guidance systems and modern entrance solutions create the prerequisites for ensuring that also in the future Mozart’s Birthplace continues to be a place of encounter, inspiration and cultural exchange.

Presentation of the house as an authentic testimony of secular city architecture in the 18th century and its varied history.
The extraordinary significance of this historic place thereby assumes central importance and opens up a new perspective on its role in Salzburg’s cultural history.

Clear thematic and temporal differentiation from the narrative in The Mozart Residence.
The new contextual organisation intensifies the profile of both houses and for visitors opens up a cohesive narrative about Mozart’s life.

Revision of the curatorial concept and enhancement of the objects on display by in-depth levels.
This means that various visitor experiences – from a highlight tour to intensification and analysis – are possible. The exhibition thereby combines academic depth with a living museum experience, thus appealing to a great variety of target groups.

Modernisation of the exhibition architecture for improved interaction between visitors and museum space.
The new spatial design intensifies the relationship between visitors, place and history, and opens up new forms of encounter with Mozart.

Integration of audio-visual stations, immersive listening experiences and new technologies such as augmented and virtual reality.
The link between music, space and narrative allows visitors to immerse themselves intensively in Mozart’s world, resulting in lasting impressions.

Clear structure of the tour in chronological sequence, focusing on various spheres such as letters, journeys, operas.
A vivid story is thereby created, exemplifying the context and offering orientation in the multi-faceted Cosmos Mozart.

Improvement of the guiding system as well as the text levels.
The new structure makes it easier to find orientation and creates space for a relaxed, thorough museum experience.

Publicly accessible entrance and shop area, as well as technically improved visitor channels.
This means that Mozart’s Birthplace will have improved accessibilty as an open cultural location and welcomes visitors from all over the world.

COMMEMORATIVE ALBUM

A commemorative book was made as a tribute to the extraordinary financial support from Salzburg and the world for the purchase of Mozart’s Birthplace in 1917 – a chronicle of benefactors in honour of all those who through their personal commitment contributed to the purchase and maintenance of the Birthplace.

By mentioning your name in the Commemorative Album 2027, consisting of the chronicle of benefactors and the dedication pages, you ensure for yourself a permanent place in the history of Mozart’s Birthplace.

 

THE DEDICATION PAGES

During the early years of the Mozarteum, enthusiastic admirers of Mozart already designed dedications with letters, drawings and photographs, so as to express their boundless admiration for Mozart. By designing an individual dedication page you can continue this wonderful tradition and thereby take your place alongside illustrious and eminent personalities such as Charles Gounod, Jules Massenet, Giacomo Puccini, King Ludwig II and Richard Strauss.

The new permanent exhibition in Mozart’s Birthplace revolves around key objects from the museum’s own collection which form the starting point for exciting stories.

If you take on patronage for one of the most important exhibits in the collection you made a valuable contribution to the contemporary presentation of Mozart’s unique legacy in one of Europe’s most frequently visited museums. Moreover, you may, if you so wish, be mentioned as the patron of ‘your’ exhibit.
