Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy
Piano Trio No. 2 in C minor, Op. 66
In its programme the Amatis Trio follows in the footsteps of Voltaire’s Candide, who discovers on his travels the multi-faceted nature of human existence. Mozart’s KV 502 reflects the initial lightness of the literary masterpiece, while the subtle harmonic transitions already indicate the deeper complexities beneath the surface. The intermingling of endeavour and spiritual triumph in Mendelssohn’s second Piano Trio is rather like a metaphor of Candide’s path to resilience and illumination. Liszt’s Tristia on the other hand moves listeners to think about their own search for fulfilment in an imperfect world.
