Robert Schumann: Symphony No. 1 in B-flat major, Op. 38, “Spring Symphony”
Three different but closely interwoven musical worlds come together in the Great Hall of the Mozarteum this evening. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Six German Dances, K. 571, open the program with the light, analytically clear formal language and rhythmic vitality that characterizes the bourgeois dance repertoire of the Viennese Classical period: here Mozart reveals himself as an observer of social forms, layering a fine web of compositional technique and emotion from seemingly simple dance-like gestures. This is contrasted by Alexey Shor's Violin Concerto No. 7 — a contemporary work that takes up the late Romantic soloist aesthetic in its tonal language and at the same time translates it into a contemporary expressiveness. The soloist Marc Bouchkov takes on the role of mediator: his tone balances between chamber music intimacy and virtuoso exposure, making the dialogue between soloist and orchestra a central narrative element of the evening. Robert Schumann's First Symphony, “Spring Symphony,” forms the final chord: as a programmatic celebration of new beginnings, it brings together the impulses presented earlier into a hymn-like, organically growing orchestral picture. The entire work—from dance to solo dialogue to symphonic departure—creates a temporal and stylistic arc that combines a sense of tradition with innovation. The fact that the Augsburg Philharmonic Orchestra is traveling from Augsburg to Salzburg, Mozart's birthplace, reinforces this interpretation: a concert as a cultural-historical dialogue between places, styles, and eras.
