For a long time, composing string quartets was considered one of the highest musical arts and was therefore rarely entrusted to women. Nevertheless, a few exceptional female composers successfully ventured into this demanding genre, including Teresa Carreño from Venezuela, Maddalena Lombardini-Sirmen and Fanny Hensel. In their programme, the musicians of the Carreño Quartet bring these remarkable voices to life, making rarely performed works audible. They present musical treasures from the 18th century to the present day, including Johanna Doderer's impressive ‘Mattsee Quartet’, and offer a fascinating insight into the diversity and quality of compositions that often remain hidden.
