GEORGE ENESCU
Piano Quartet No. 1 in D major op. 16
"The only progress that can profoundly influence the future is that which grows out of the past" was the credo of the Romanian composer George Enescu. This approach was also crucial for his Hungarian-French colleague György Kurtág, who was also born in Romania. Both admired the archetypal genius of Mozart, but were tireless in their search for new forms of expression. This is the dichotomy of the programme: tradition meets innovation, classical idioms are juxtaposed with images from the East.
