Mozart
Requiem in D minor, KV 626
Completion by Franz Xaver Süssmayr
Premiered in 1903, the drama Kuolema (Death) by the Finnish writer Arvid Järnefelt became known above all through its incidental music. The six compositions accompanying the play were written by Jean Sibelius, the author’s brother-in-law. In 1906, Sibelius revised Nos. 3 and 4 and combined them under the title Scene with Cranes. With its sombre atmosphere and closing bars that seem to drift into the beyond like the soul of the protagonist herself, the work forms a symbolic and deeply evocative link to the restrained opening measures of Mozart’s ever-moving Requiem.
