PASSIONEN

Two powerful aspects of the Passion are presented in one concert: Beethoven’s Christus am Ölberge and Schubert’s Stabat Mater. The renowned lautten compagney BERLIN, the Monteverdi Choir Hamburg and outstanding soloists under the direction of Antonius Adamske bring these works to life. The two composers approach the Passion from contrasting perspectives: Schubert focuses on Mary witnessing the suffering and death of her son, while Beethoven turns to Christ himself, caught between human fear and his sense of purpose. Beethoven’s work was performed in Salzburg in 1817, against the backdrop of his advancing deafness. Schubert composed his Stabat Mater in 1816, aged just nineteen. Both works are rooted in the Classical tradition while exploring new forms of expressive intensity that point towards Romanticism.
