Music is listening. The musicians listen to one another. The audience listens. And composers always listen to the past and the present as well. Thus, in the opening concert of the CAMERATA anniversary season, much can be heard of the moods and currents the composers absorbed into their works.
In his Divertimento, written immediately before fleeing Nazi terror and emigrating to the USA, Bartók looked back to traditions of classical music that he had innovatively developed further, as well as to the folk music of his homeland. Haydn wove memories of the late Mozart and Baroque motifs into his penultimate London Symphony. In his Piano Concerto in G major, Ravel oscillates between a melancholic recollection of Mozart’s melodies, contemporary neoclassicism, and the blues. In Kurtág’s 100th year, CAMERATA performs his homage “Ligeti’s Century,” which he composed in 2023 in memory of the 100th birthday of his composer friend. Together with CAMERATA, the young star conductor Finnegan Downie Dear and the extravagant pianist Alexandre Tharaud listen to all these messages within the compositions.
