Programme
Maria Anna Mozart: an outstanding musician, a pianist and a child prodigy of her time. Four years older than her brother Wolfgang, she played a central role in the life of what is probably Salzburg’s most famous son, but also beyond: as virtually the first Mozart biographer, Maria Anna took charge of her brother’s estate.
What we know about Maria Anna Mozart is often framed in the context of her father, Leopold. He is said to have forbidden her from pursuing her passion. To have banished her to St. Gilgen and married her off to a man she did not love. Her brother, on the other hand, was encouraged. And was allowed to become who he was.
But the story can also be told differently. Namely, that Maria Anna Mozart was an outstanding pianist who pursued her passion well into old age and also earned her own living as a piano teacher. This is how Matthias and Eva have attempted to portray her. A book about a Salzburg legend, a woman of extraordinary talent and diligence, with a great sense of responsibility. A child of her time.
The Salzburg-based musician Anna Gerstendorfer will accompany the reading on the piano. Through her compositions, she brings her predecessor’s spirit to life and explores what Maria Anna might sound like today.
