Romanticism is the 19th century, it is the magic of nature and grand emotions, it is death for love and the joys of redemption. But this era was also filled with the passionate energy of dance and lavish celebrations.

The Salzburg Wind Philharmonic, conducted by its principal conductor Hansjörg Angerer, is dedicating its traditional Epiphany Concert 2026 to the intoxicating ‘music of Romanticism’, beginning with Mendelssohn's jubilant Wedding March and ending with the enticing ‘Voices of Spring’ by Johann Strauss Jr. In between, Wenzel Fuchs, principal clarinettist of the Berlin Philharmonic and concertmaster of the Salzburg Wind Philharmonic, will interpret Weber's brilliant Concertino, spreading the splendour and glory of Wagner's ‘Meistersinger’ overture and proving that this ‘national’ century also discovered and reflected the music of the Renaissance. In addition to polkas, waltzes and Bohemian furiants, a special focus will be on Tchaikovsky's suite from his master ballet ‘The Nutcracker’. This is a virtuoso and melodious dance sequence that takes us not only to romantic Russia and the fairy-tale land of the Sugar Plum Fairy, but also to the Orient and China.

Hansjörg Angerer and his orchestra take us on a fascinating and varied journey through time and space, which also leads us into the early 20th century with a rousing waltz sequence from Richard Strauss' opera ‘Der Rosenkavalier’. And with the furious polka ‘Stürmisch in Lieb' und Tanz’ by the ‘Waltz King’ or Carl Maria von Weber's irresistible “Urwalzer” – ‘Aufforderung zum Tanz’ – the romantic musical journey is rounded off in style.
