Programme

The oratorio based on images from the Bible (also: Cantata for the Cholera Dead - the epidemic raging in 1831 caused countless victims in the year the work was composed) is one of Fanny Hensel's most important works.
Most important works by Fanny Hensel, whose 220th birthday we are celebrating this year. The work, which delves deep into the religious and spiritual themes of the Bible, captivates with its emotional
expressive power, complex harmonies and rich orchestration. The themes range from creation and redemption to human sin and divine grace. In choirs and ensembles, Hensel demonstrates her skill in dealing with contrapuntal structures, which lend the music a differentiated and complex language and demonstrate her abilities as a composer of large vocal and instrumental works.
The Symphony No. 3 in G minor by her contemporary Louise Farrenc dates from 1847 (the year of Fanny Hensel's death) and is a jewel of Romantic music that is being performed in Salzburg for the first time.
