Programme
Nadia Kalmykova, Liuba Kalmykova (violins), Yan Lok Hoi (viola), Constantin Siepermann (cello) play works by Elisabeth Violet Maconchy (1907-1994),
Dora Pejačević (1885-1923) and Grażyna Bacewicz (1909-1969) among others.
Dora Pejačević sets the zeitgeist of the fin de siècle to music in her compositions. Her late Romantic style seems transfigured, but her restless compositional style does not allow her to lose herself. One is always in the eye of a melodic-harmonic hurricane. The composer was hardly lacking in skill, and audibly not in art! Elisabeth V. Maconchy, a pupil of Vaughan Williams, is best known in the United Kingdom.
in the United Kingdom. Through her compositions and her commitment, she paved the way for the British avant-garde.
With Webernian precision and Britten-like playfulness, she knows how to present her themes to perfection. Grażyna Bacewicz deserves a place in every concert.
Her French-jazz style à la Ravel beguilingly demonstrates how ambivalent the boundary between “classical” and “serious” music is.
