Erich Wolfgang Korngold
Suite for two violins, violoncello and piano (left hand) op. 23
Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Sergei Prokofiev, Maurice Ravel and Paul Hindemith all composed piano concertos for the left hand. The Austrian-American pianist Paul Wittgenstein, brother of the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, commissioned them after his right arm was amputated following an injury in the First World War. He continued his artistic career undeterred - and this is how Korngold's Suite op. 23 was created, with Wittgenstein himself playing the piano part at its premiere in Vienna in 1930. With Bach's Partita in B minor for solo violin and works for violin and piano by Mozart and Schönberg, Benjamin Schmid & Friends create an exciting musical arc from baroque music to dodecaphony.
One intermission; end at approx. 9.15 p.m.
