Filming permits

Filming in the buildings of the International Mozarteum Foundation is generally permitted – these include Mozart’s Birthplace, the Mozart Residence (including the autograph vault and the Magic Flute House), and the Mozarteum on Schwarzstraße with the Great Hall, the Viennese Hall, the Bibliotheca Mozartiana, and the foyers.

As a rule, film recordings require a written (fee-based) filming permit. Due to the possibility of follow-up enquiries, filming requests must be submitted in writing using our form at least 14 business days prior to the planned date. For more elaborate productions (e.g., documentaries, feature films), a lead time of at least three months is recommended.

Same-day reporting may be approved at short notice on a case-by-case basis. Please contact presse@mozarteum.at directly.

Any approval will be granted as part of a written agreement and subject to an appropriate usage fee.

Each filming request will be reviewed and decided on a case-by-case basis. A prerequisite for any approval is the careful and respectful handling of cultural monuments, museum objects, and exhibits, as well as strict compliance with conservation requirements.

In particular, approval cannot be granted if the filming:
would endanger cultural assets,
would interfere with the official institutional interests, or
would unjustifiably obstruct general visitor traffic,
or if the filming and its intended use are incompatible with the responsibilities, position, and reputation of the International Mozarteum Foundation.

Filming on weekends and public holidays will only be permitted if no supervision is required. Large tripods, heavy equipment, etc., are therefore not allowed on weekends.

Interview requests

Experts from the International Mozarteum Foundation in the fields of academia, museums, and management are generally available for interviews. Requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Approval and costs

Permission for filming is granted subject to a prior written agreement regarding an appropriate usage fee. In addition to this filming fee, an additional reimbursement will be charged for all expenses incurred by the filming, as well as any loss of revenue. This includes, in particular, any personnel costs for supervision (and, if necessary, the presence of conservation staff).

The amount of the usage fee depends, among other factors, on the time of filming (during or outside of opening hours), the extent of technical and personnel requirements, and the intended use of the footage. Information regarding the costs can be made available upon request, although binding statements regarding the applicable filming fee will only be made after the application form has been reviewed.
